CORE Praxis Support

Designing the Program of Study and Aligned Academic Support

As students enrolled in Rhode Island College, Institute for Early Childhood Teaching and Learning, candidates will participate in 1.5 hours of academic support each week during semesters 1, 2 and 3 or until such time as they have passed the Praxis/CORE Academic Skills for Educators exam.

The institute is collaborating with Rhode Island College’s Learning for Life and Office of Academic Support and Information Services (OASIS) to pro- vide one-on-one or small gorup tutoring to prepare students forthe Praxis/CORE exam. Services are provided by Learning for Life navigators – learning skills specialists and graduate assistants – at non-tra- ditional times to ensure accessibilty for all students.

The following is an example of how academic sup- ports are determined:

  • Each candidate will be administered (Math, Writing, Reading) CASAS diagnostic testing to determine academic needs at the beginning of the program.
  • Once academic needs have been determined for each individual candidate, an Individual Academic Support Plan will be developed. The academic support plan will include specific areas of need and types of support (1 on 1 or small group) to be provided.
  • Academic support will be provided 1.5 hours per week (on the same day as coursework), face-to-face, on campus (3:00 – 4:30pm).
  • Follow-up diagnostic testing will be administered at the end of the first semester to determine growth.
  • Learning Needs Evaluations will be evaluated on an as needed basis for individual students through the FSEHD CEP Department.
