According to the US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of people in health promotion and healthcare occupations is projected to grow 19% from 2014 to 2024. This growth is the direct result of the rising costs of healthcare, and state and national initiatives to support health for all.

Building on their extensive field experiences, our students graduate into their communities as reflective practitioners who model lifelong learning, technological competence, and skills in advocacy and collaboration to help our clients achieve optimal health outcomes.
More About our Major:
The B.S. in Community and Public Health Promotion is a multidisciplinary degree program originating in the Health and Physical Education department. Community and public health educators, health promotion professionals, and other graduates of this program possess the passion, interests, and skills to improve individual and population health outcomes by assisting individuals and communities in voluntarily adopting and maintaining healthy behaviors and lifestyles. These professionals
- Assist individuals and communities in developing behaviors and skills that reduce health risks and enhance quality of life.
- Create, develop and evaluate culturally-responsive interventions and health promotion programs based on community needs and evidence-informed practices.
- Improve health outcomes through support and development of policies or systems changes that address social determinants of health and health disparities.
- Engage in advocacy initiatives related to community and public health.
The major includes core courses in community and public health, nutrition, epidemiology, biology, psychology, interdisciplinary electives, additional health-focused classes, as well as a practicum that focuses on experiential learning and professional skill development, and a full-semester internship experience in a community and public health setting. Students can select from one of three concentrations:
- Health and Aging
- Public Health Promotion
- Women's Health
Graduates are well prepared to pursue careers in a variety of community and public health promotion settings such as health departments, hospitals, community health centers, private for-profit businesses, governmental health organizations, non-governmental health organizations, and social service agencies. Graduates are also prepared to pursue graduate study in a variety of fields and professional certification in multiple areas (e.g., as an NCHES Certified Health Education Specialist or as an NBPHE-certified Public Health specialist).
