Adapted Physical Education Certification

The mission of the Adapted Physical Education (APE) Professional Preparation Certification process is to provide opportunities for students (undergraduate and graduate) and certified physical educators to demonstrate professional skills, advocacy, assessment and leadership qualities necessary to effectively implement programs that serve to improve the health, physical activity, and wellness of individuals with disabilities.

For undergraduates of Rhode Island College most of the Adapted Physical Education requirements from RIDE are already part of the Physical Education major. Completing competencies and required hours to earn a RI Adapted Physical Education certificate is the responsibility of the individual.

Graduates of Rhode Island College wanting to earn the RI Adapted Physical Education certificate can request a review of courses taken to determine which courses may count towards his/her certificate requirements. Which courses are accepted is based how long ago the course was taken. Completing competencies and required hours to earn a RI Adapted Physical Education certificate is the responsibility of the individual.

Graduates of another institution besides Rhode Island College wanting to earn the RI Adapted Physical Education certificate through Rhode Island College can request a review of courses taken from other institutions to determine which courses may count towards his/her certificate requirements. Which courses are accepted is based on how the content in each course aligns with required course content and how long ago the course was taken. Completing competencies and required hours to earn a RI Adapted Physical Education certificate is the responsibility of the individual.
