Emergency Response Training
The college has published an
Emergency Procedures Quick Reference Guide. It will be the centerpiece for comprehensive emergency response for administrators, faculty, staff and students.
Additionally the college has prepared an
Active Shooter Quick Reference Guide. It is the responsibility of all faculty and staff members to be familiar with the safety and emergency response information and procedures detailed in the guide.

Note: Fire safety procedures are discussed regularly with all students who live in campus residence halls and a series of fire drills is scheduled annually.

Options for Consideration is an informational video that demonstrates possible actions to take if confronted with an active shooter scenario. The instructive video provides precise definitions of common terms and reviews the choices of evacuating, hiding, or, as an option of last resort, challenging the shooter (“Run-Hide-Fight”). The video also provides important information on how to act after law enforcement personnel arrive on the scene – to understand their role and to avoid being mistaken for a shooter.

Surviving an Active Shooter
This video depicts how to respond to an active shooter in three of the more common situations in which shooting incidents have taken place: a warehouse (substitute the shelves of boxes for shelves of books and you have a library), a large, open food court/dining facility, and a college. Based on the Run-Hide-Fight approach to active shooter survival, the video provides additional information on recommended protocol for assisting injured victims and for interacting with law enforcement officers on the scene. Active Shooter: What You Can Do Course
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has developed an independent study course titled
Active Shooter: What You Can Do. This course was developed to provide the public with guidance on how to prepare for and respond to active shooter crisis situations.
Upon completion of
Active Shooter: What You Can Do, administrators, faculty, staff and students will be able to:
- Describe the actions to take when confronted with an active shooter and to assist responding law enforcement officials;
- Recognize potential workplace violence indicators;
- Describe actions to take to prevent and prepare for potential active shooter incidents; and
- Describe how to manage the consequences of an active shooter incident.
