English Department Faculty Writing Awards,
Critical and Creative Writing

Eligibility:any English major of at least sophomore standing who will be continuing as a student at Rhode Island College in Fall 2016.
How to apply: submit to Ms. Aywas in CL 264
  • Portfolio (either critical or creative writing) of no more than 20 pages in which the student’s name does not appear (portfolio should be labeled “critical” or “creative”)
  • Cover sheet with your name, address, phone number, and student ID
Student may submit two portfolios, one for each category.

Donald F. Lyons Scholarship

Elgibility:any full-time junior or senior English major with the desire and evidence of aptitude to enter the field of teaching, who will be continuing as a student at Rhode Island College in Fall 2016.
How to apply: submit to Ms. Aywas in CL 264
  • Letter of interest
  • Transcript
  • Letter of recommendation from a faculty member

John J. Salesses Scholarship

Eligibility: any declared English major who will have at least junior standing in Fall 2016, with a focus in British or American literature and a GPA of 3.0, who will be continuing as a student at Rhode Island College in Fall 2016.
How to apply: submit to Ms. Aywas in CL 264
  • 1-2 page statement about his/her interest in British or American Literature
  • Transcript

Amy Thompson Prize in Children's Literature

Eligibility: Students majoring or minoring in English with an interest in reading, teaching, writing, and/or scholarship on children’s literature.
How to apply: submit to Ms. Aywas in CL 264
  • Brief statement (1-2 page, approximately 300-600 words) from student on his/her interest in children’s literature.
