In November 2007, Rhode Island College's English Department was issued a charter to establish a chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society. Our chapter name is Alpha Omicron Pi and includes faculty, alumni, graduate, and undergraduate members.

Sigma Tau Delta members are nominated by the English faculty. To be eligible, undergraduate or graduate students who are majoring or minoring in English must demonstrate high standards of academic excellence, with a minimum 3.3 GPA in English and 3.0 in all coursework. Nominees must also have completed at least three semesters of college coursework with a minimum of two courses in English language or literature above the freshman level for undergraduates and at least six semester hours of graduate work for graduate students. Sigma Tau Delta members receive recognition for their academic achievement and are eligible for a variety of national Sigma Tau Delta scholarships, internships, and publication opportunities.
