An internship constitutes a special form of independent study; therefore, the policies and procedures of the Department of Anthropology for "Independent and Directed Study" and "Credit Limits in the Major" should be followed.

The procedure for creating an internship experience should follow these steps:

  • A student interested in an internship should contact the department chair, who will identify and refer the student to an appropriate faculty member (either a designated coordinator of internships or a faculty member with appropriate expertise).
  • The student develops a written proposal in conjunction with the faculty member and submits the proposal to the department chair. All elements of the proposal shall conform to all applicable college policies. A work/training internship shall normally entail four (4) hours of work per week for each credit hour (Normally, an internship will consist of fourteen (14) week of work/training and one (1) week for evaluation).
  • The proposal must be reviewed and a recommendation made to the chair by the faculty of the department at a department meeting or a meeting of the Departmental Advisory Committee.
  • An approved proposal signed by the student, the faculty member, and the chair shall be submitted not later than 15 November or 15 April (for spring or fall semester, respectively) for the approval of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. If approved, a section of Anthropology 495: Internship in Anthropology will be created and the student will be registered.
  • Once begun, the student's progress shall be monitored by the faculty member through periodic meetings with the student and by observation of the student's work at the internship site and/or reports from the on-site supervisor.
  • Upon completion of the internship, the faculty member shall be responsible for the submission of a grade (using criteria and procedures defined in the proposal).

The proposal shall contain but not be limited to the following:

  • A summary statement of the type, nature, location, and duration of the internship.
  • A rationale supporting the purpose of the internship, its academic content, and its role in the student's major and academic program.
  • A description of the scope of the internship.
  • A plan-of-study or plan-of-work.
  • A procedure for evaluation and grading.
  • A plan of conferences with the faculty member and the on-site supervisor, and/or a plan for an evaluative report from the on-site supervisor.
