Students successfully completing the Honors Program in Accounting will receive recognition by an “Honors” designation on their transcript. This designation may be included on student resumes and graduate school applications.

The program is intended to provide exceptional students an opportunity to demonstrate their skills for addition recognition.

Accounting

Minimum Requirements to Apply

  1. Completion of ACCT 201, ACCT 202, CIS 251, ECON 214, ECON, 215, Math 177 and Math 238 or Math 248 (4 credits), ENG 230 with a cumulative grade average in these courses of 3.25
  2. A declared major in accounting
  3. 3.0 overall cumulative grade average
  4. A minimum grade of B in ACCT 310 and ACCT 311.

Minimum Requirements for Honors Award

  1. A grade of B in each course taken in the accounting major. All classes must be taken at Rhode Island College, including ACCT 311 and ACCT 312
  2. 3.0 overall grade average
  3. Successful completion of a written research project with oral presentation to the accounting faculty*
  4. 4. Enrollment in Independent Study (ACC 491, ACC492) (6 credits) while working on the research project. These courses are in lieu of 6 credits from restricted electives. Students planning to sit for the CPA examination should plan to add ACC 451 to their program.
  5. Completion of all courses for the accounting major

Computer Information Systems

Minimum Requirements to Apply

  1. Completion of ACCT 201, ACCT 202, CIS 251, ECON 214, ECON, 215, Math 177 and Math 238 or Math 248 (4 credits), ENG 230 with a cumulative grade average in these courses of 3.25
  2. A declared major in CIS
  3. 3.0 overall cumulative grade average
  4. A minimum grade of B in CIS 352 and either CIS 255 or 257.

Minimum Requirements for Honors Award

  1. A grade of B in each course taken in the major. All classes must be taken at Rhode Island College, including CIS 352 and CIS 453.
  2. 3.0 overall grade average
  3. Successful completion of a written research project with oral presentation to the faculty*
  4. Enrollment in Independent Study (CIS 491, CIS 492)(6 credits), while working on research project
  5. Completion of all courses for the CIS major

For Both Accounting and CIS Honors

How to Apply

  1. Complete the Honors Program Application with a separate statement of why you wish to pursue the program
  2. Have two letters of recommendation from separate accounting faculty members
  3. Identify on the application your Honors Program Advisor who will supervise your research project and have that advisor sign the application
  4. Submit no later than one full semester prior to your last semester the application to the Honors Director in the Accounting Department who will forward it to the Chair of the Department.

Other

  1. ​Candidates who cannot successfully complete the honors program or who wish to opt out later of the program are eligible to complete the accounting major.
  2. It is acceptable to change your Honors Program Advisor with approval of the Director of the Honors Program.

*Successful completion of a written research project with oral presentation to the faculty is achieved by developing a proposal to study a specific area within accounting under the supervision of a faculty member with the proposal approved by the supervising faculty member and the department chair. The supervising faculty member will guide the student through the entire research paper process. The completed project will be orally presented to the accounting faculty as a whole who may make suggestions and observations. Completion of the project rests with supervising faculty member and department chair after the oral presentation.​​
