PROVIDENCE, R.I. Rhode Island College continues to offer a roster of stellar professional performances, art exhibits and student shows.

VISUAL ARTS

Bannister Gallery opens the fall season on Thursday, Sept. 3, with “Volume IV,” by Amy Montali, associate professor of art at Rhode Island College. This exhibit is the latest in her series of cinematic, psychologically charged photographs. It runs through Friday, Oct. 2, with a reception on Thursday, Sept. 10, at 5 p.m. All Bannister exhibits are free and open to the public.

Robert Dilworth’s traveling exhibit titled “Memories of Inhabited Spaces” will be on display from Oct. 13 to Nov. 13. Through the use of stencils, spray paint, stitching, fabric and printed materials, Dilworth expands the concept of contemporary painting. An artist’s reception will be held on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 5 p.m.

From Nov. 24 through Dec. 23, Bannister Gallery will feature the “Annual Faculty Exhibition.” This show features two-dimensional works by RIC full-time and adjunct faculty. A reception will be held on Thursday, Dec. 3, at 5 p.m. Gallery walk-throughs with the exhibiting artists will be included during the reception.

PERFORMING ARTS SERIES

RIC’s Fall Performing Arts Series opens on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 7:30 p.m., with the American Shakespeare Center on Tour’s performance of “Julius Caesar” in RIC’s Sapinsley Hall. The production uses Shakespeare’s original staging, placing the audience in the center of the action (admission $35).

On Thursday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m., the National Circus and Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China will present the Grand Flying Trapeze, Group Contortion and the Great Teeterboard, among other exciting acts. The extravaganza takes place in the Auditorium in Roberts Hall (admission $35). 

Compañia Flamenca José Porcel and their live orchestra bring the golden age of flamenco to RIC on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium in Roberts Hall (admission $35).

On Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m., the Bollywood Masala Orchestra and Dancers of India will take you on a lively journey of Indian music and dance in the Auditorium in Roberts Hall (admission $35).

A Performing Arts Series favorite, the Muir String Quartet, returns for its 23rd season on Monday, Nov. 16, presenting Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 1 in E-flat Major, Op. 12; Bartok’s String Quartet No. 3; and Dvorak’s Piano Quintet in A Major, Op. 81, with guest artist Michele Levin on piano. This concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall (reserved seating $35).

THEATRE

RIC student theatrical productions this fall are “Doubt,” running Sept. 23-27 in Forman Theatre, and “Crimes of the Heart,” running Nov. 11-15 in Forman Theatre (general admission $15).

DANCE

Fall dance programming includes performances by professional and RIC student dance artists. The New York-based Arch Dance Company will meld hip-hop with modern dance and feature the RIC Dance Company on Friday, Oct. 23, at 7:30 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall (admission $15).

The RIC Dance Company will present their Annual Mini Concert for K-12 Students from Oct. 22-24 at 10 a.m. in Sapinsley Hall (free for K-12 students in Rhode Island and Massachusetts). A second concert by the company, titled “It’s All Your Parents’ Fault: A Theatrical Movement Experience,” will be performed on Dec. 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall (admission $15).

MUSIC

Three Wednesday Masterworks Concerts have been scheduled this season: “Trick or Treat with a Beat” on Oct. 28; “Simple Gifts, featuring soprano Ilana Davidson, soprano and clarinetist Ian Greitzer, on Nov. 18; and “Joyful Celebration” on Dec. 9. All concerts begin at 1 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall (donation $10). “Joyful Celebration” will have a repeat performance at 7:30 p.m.

RIC student music ensembles dominate the fall season and include the following performances:

  • RIC Chamber Orchestra and Small Ensembles: Sundays, Oct. 4 and Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall (admission free).
  • RIC Wind Ensemble: Fridays, Oct. 9 and Dec. 4, at 8 p.m. in the Auditorium in Roberts Hall (admission $10).
  • RIC Symphony Orchestra: Tuesdays, Oct. 13 and Dec. 8, at 8 p.m. in the Auditorium in Roberts Hall (admission $10).
  • Annual Halloween Collage Concert, sponsored by the Collegiate Chapter of the National Association for Music Education: Friday, Oct. 30, at 8 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall (admission $10; free for those in costume).
  • RIC Opera Workshop: Sunday, Nov. 22, at 7 p.m. in Forman Theatre (admission free).
  • RIC Jazz Combos Concert: Wednesday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. in Forman Theatre (admission free).
  • RIC Chorus, Chamber Singers and Women’s Chorus: Friday, Dec. 11, at 8 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall (admission $10).
  • RIC Concert Jazz Band Winter Concert: Monday, Dec. 14, at 8 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall (admission $10).
