Rhode Island College Named College of Distinction for Second Year in a Row
PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Rhode Island College has again been named listed on "Colleges of Distinction," a website for college-bound students, guidance counselors and parents. Its listings include schools that are well known, as well as hidden gems.
Each of the "Colleges of Distinction" is cited for excelling in four key areas: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant communities and successful outcomes.These colleges also are cited for having the most exciting classrooms in the country and some of the most innovative programs.
“It is an honor to have Rhode Island College recognized for a second year by Colleges of Distinction,” said RIC President Nancy Carriuolo. “Our faculty are known for engaging our students as active learners in and outside the classroom, and that creates the high quality of education for which RIC is known.”
The “2012-2013 Colleges of Distinction” is available online, and through the Kindle website, where an editor writes: "This guide gives you a reliable, journalistic look at schools that may not have the biggest names in higher education, but that consistently do a great job educating undergraduate students.”
RIC is described on the Colleges of Distinction site as a school that “combines excellent teaching with an excellent open-door policy. Students find personalized relationships with faculty and a welcoming campus environment. They attend classes on a woodsy 180-acre campus in the Mount Pleasant area of Providence, where class sizes average 20 students. Students can choose from nearly 90 majors and programs within five schools: the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Feinstein School of Education and Human Development, the School of Management, the School of Nursing and the School of Social Work.”
Dr. Kyle Kurek, Class of ’93, director of the Pediatric Pathology Fellowship Program at Children’s Hospital Boston and pathology instructor at Harvard Medical School, was one of a number of RIC alum quoted on the site, lauding the education they received.
Kurek said, “I am where I am now, because of RIC. At RIC I had the benefit of great professors in the sciences and humanities. I still see my biology professor regularly, even though it’s been 20 years since I sat in his classroom.”
