Rhode Island College Inducts New Members of Portuguese Honor Society and Recognizes Lima Scholarship Recipients on April 10

Rhode Island College’s Portuguese Studies Program will induct six outstanding students and fourhonorary members into the Sigma Chapter of the Phi Lambda Beta Portuguese Honor Society on Wednesday, April 10. The ceremony will also include recognition of Lima Scholarship recipients. 

The event will begin at 11 a.m. in the Alumni Lounge in Roberts Hall at Rhode Island College. George Monteiro, professor emeritus of English, Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at Brown University, will be guest speaker. Silvia Oliveira, RIC assistant professor of Portuguese and Sigma Chapter coordinator, will serve as mistress of ceremonies, and RIC President Nancy Carriuolo will be present to welcome honorees, faculty and guests.

This year’s inductees into the Rhode Island College Portuguese Honor Society are Christopher Barbosa, Vanessa Branco, Filipe Fernandes, Carlos Neves, Stacey Saraiva and Liana Viveiros. Nominations are based on high scholarship (a minimum of 3.25 grade point average in Portuguese courses, and a 3.00 cumulative grade point average).

Honorary members of the honor society are Monteiro; João Luís Morgado Pacheco, Conselheiro das Comunidades Portugueses and board member of the Institute for Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies (IPLWS); António Ambrósio, RIC Class of 2005 and chair of the IPLWS board; and John Lema Jr., benefactor of the John A. and Mary V. Lima Scholarship in Portuguese Studies at Rhode Island College. Honorary members are selected on the basis of high service, scholarship or advocacy in the promotion of Portuguese Studies, the Portuguese language and Portuguese, Brazilian and African Lusophone cultures at Rhode Island College and in the community.

The 2013 recipients of the John A. and Mary V. Lima Scholarship are Justin Soares, Carlos Neves and Liana Viveiros. This scholarship is awarded annually to students who demonstrate high academic achievement and a commitment to studying Portuguese at Rhode Island College.
