Rhode Island College Hosts Beekeeping Course
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Rhode Island College will host two five-week beginner beekeeping courses offered by the Rhode Island Beekeepers Association (RIBA). Topics will include getting started, understanding the honeybee life cycle, choosing an apiary site, buying bees and equipment, assembling the hive, installing package bees, catching swarms, identifying nectar sources, identifying bee diseases and pests, inspecting hives and wintering, as well as a demonstration of a variety of beekeeping equipment.
Participants may choose from one of two series of classes:
Fridays – Feb. 1, 8, 15 and 22 and March 1
Saturdays – Feb. 2, 9, 16 and 23 and March 2
All classes will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Rhode Island College, in Forman Center Room A.
The cost is $65 per person. Additional family members at the same address may attend the course for $10 per person, however materials and RIBA membership are not included.

Rhode Island College is hosting the Beginner Beekeeping Classes offered in partnership with RIBA as part of the college’s Urban and Community Farming Initiative (UCFI). RIC has hosted two beehives on campus since summer 2012, and additional UCFI programs include hosting the Fruit Hill Farmers Market, maintaining a community garden, and supporting an ongoing speaker series on perspectives on urban and sustainable agriculture.
