Rhode Island College junior and Providence resident Genesis Sanchez Tavarez outperformed her competition on the first round of the nationally televised Hispanic College Quiz show. Sanchez Tavarez competed in the Grand Championship round, which aired on CW28 at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28.

Launched in 2008 by the Hispanic Association of College and Universities (HACU), the Hispanic College Quiz show is designed to encourage a broader appreciation of Hispanic culture. The multi-round competition features nine college students from Hispanic-serving higher education institutions and offers a scholarship to the grand champion. Airing during Hispanic Heritage Month, the show was taped this summer in Chicago.

Sanchez Tavarez teamed with RIC Professor of History David Espinosa to prepare for the show’s rigorous questions and chose RIC Director of the Unity Center Antoinette Gomes to serve as her mentor and coach during the show’s taping. Pursuing three separate majors – political science, justice studies and public administration – Sanchez Tavarez plans to attend law school after earning her RIC undergraduate degree.

The quiz show’s other competitors attend Adams State University, Carlos Albizu University, Guttman Community College – CUNY, Oklahoma Panhandle State University, San Jose State University, St. Edward’s University, St. Philip’s College and the University of Houston-Downtown. All competitors are currently enrolled in higher education institutions that belong to HACU.

Established in 1854, Rhode Island College serves approximately 9,000 undergraduate and graduate students through its five schools: the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Feinstein School of Education and Human Development, the School of Social Work, the School of Management and the School of Nursing.
