PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rhode Island College announces a full lineup of fine arts, theatre, dance and music events this spring.

FINE ARTS EVENTS

Bannister Gallery leads the spring programming with “New Works by Roger Tibbetts.” Tibbetts is professor of art at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. His show will be curated by James Montford, Bannister gallery director. This exhibit runs from Jan. 22 through Feb. 20, with an artist reception on Thursday, Feb. 19, at 5 p.m. It will be curated by Bannister Gallery Director James Montford.

A group exhibit, featuring sculptors Emily Duke, Brian Kakas, Yiu-Keung Lee, Sarah Lindley and Blake Williams, will run from March 3-28 and is titled “Perspectives/National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts.” This exhibit will be curated by Diana Pancioli.

New York-based artist Sook Jin Jo will hold a solo exhibit – “Transformations” – from April 2-23. Born in Korea, Jo produces sculptural assemblages, installations, public works, drawings, collages, photographs and performances. This exhibit will be curated by RIC Professors of Art Lisa Russell and Heemong Kim.

From April 30 through May 15 RIC undergraduate and graduate art students will showcase their work in a student exhibition.

And the final exhibit of the season, “Wordsmith/Metalsmith,” curated by Sara Picard, will showcase contemporary jewelry and metalwork by artists Boris Bally, Kristin Beeler, Robert Ebendorf, Mary Hallam Pearse, Liz Hamman, Katherine Richmond and Keith Lo Bue. This exhibit runs from Tuesday, May 19, through Friday, June 19, with an opening reception on May 19 at 5 p.m.

Bannister Gallery exhibits are free and open to the public. Hours are Tuesday through Friday, noon to 8 p.m. or by appointment with the gallery director.

PERFORMING ARTS SERIES EVENTS

RIC’s Spring Performing Arts Series opens on Monday, Feb. 2, at 7:30 p.m. with a concert by The Muir String Quartet in Sapinsley Hall. On the program is Mozart’s String Quartet in C Major, Dissonant, K. 465; Janáček’s String Quartet No. 1, Kreutzer Sonata; and Dvořák’s String Quartet No. 11 in C Major, Op. 61. (Reserved seating $35.)

The Muir appears again on Monday, April 6, at 7:30 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall, alongside vocalist James Demler. The ensemble will perform Dvořák’s Cypresses, B. 152; Smetana’s Quartet No. 1 in E Minor; and Barber’s Dover Beach, Op. 3. (Reserved seating $35.)

Tango Buenos Aires, direct from Argentina, will present a new production titled “Song of Eva Perón” on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in Roberts Hall Auditorium (reserved seating $35).

Acrobatics will be offered by TIMBER! A Production of Cirque Alfonse on Wednesday, March 4, at 7:30 p.m. This theatrical dance troupe gives expression to the exploits of the first North American lumberjacks, loggers and farmers, using raw materials of the forest and farm equipment. The performance venue will be Roberts Hall Auditorium (reserved seating $35).

The Performing Arts Series cap its spring season with a production by the New York-based dance company KEIGWIN + COMPANY on Wednesday, March 11, at 7:30 p.m. in Roberts Hall Auditorium (reserved seating $35).

MUSIC EVENTS

Three inspired performances are scheduled for the Wednesday Masterworks Concerts led by internationally renowned composer/pianist and RIC artist-in-residence Judith Lynn Stillman:

  • On Feb. 18 Soprano Diana McVey will present “On Wings of Song,” with Stillman on piano.
     
  • On March 18, “Repertoire and Repartee” will feature RIC Associate Professors of Music Ian Greitzer on clarinet and Mary Ellen Kregler on flute.
     
  • And on April 22, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the 1915 Armenian genocide, Masterworks will present “Armenia 100,” featuring the world premiere of When the Music Stopped by Stillman. The premiere will be directed by Trinity Repertory Company Artistic Director Curt Columbus and feature stage and film actor Armen Garo, baritone Vago Ohanyan and visual artist Mher Khachatryan. Opening remarks will be given by Chief Judge Haiganush Bedrosian.

All Masterworks Concerts begin at 1 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall, with tickets at the door (suggested donation $10). A repeat performance of “Armenia 100” will be held at 7:30 p.m.

RIC performances by student ensembles include: the RIC Chamber Orchestra and Small Ensembles on Sunday, Feb. 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall (admission free); the RIC Wind Ensemble’s High School Band Invitational Concert on Friday, Feb. 27, at 8 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall (admission $10); the RIC Symphony Orchestra’s 20th Annual Samuel and Esther Chester Performance Award Concert on Tuesday, March 3, at 8 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall (admission free); the Spring Choral Concert on Friday, March 6, at 8 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall (admission $10); the RIC Jazz Combos Concert on Wednesday, April 15, at 7 p.m. in Forman Theatre (admission free); and the RIC Opera Workshop and Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, May 10, at 7 p.m. in Forman Theatre (admission free).

 DANCE EVENTS

RIC Dance Company’s annual Spring Dance Concert takes place Feb. 13-15 in Sapinsley Hall (admission $15), featuring choreography by Jennifer Archibald, Kellie Ann Lynch, Deb Meunier, Jessica Pearson, Marta Renzi and Jenny Rocha. Concert times are 7:30 p.m. (Feb. 13-14) and 2 p.m. (Feb. 15).

The Dance Company’s final performance of the season – the Student Choreography Showcase – will be a culmination of a yearlong exploration of dance through classes and teacher-mentored rehearsals. The showcase will be held on Thursday, April 30, and Friday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Forman Theatre (admission $15).

THEATRE EVENTS

The RIC Mainstage Theatre will present the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Our Town from Feb. 18-22 in the Forman Theatre (admission $15) and Godspell from April 16-19 in Roberts Hall Auditorium (reserved seating $20). Performance times for Our Town are 7:30 p.m. (Feb. 18-21) and 2 p.m. (Feb. 21-22). For Godspell, show times are 7:30 p.m. (April 16-18) and 2 p.m. (April 18-19).
