PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rhode Island College’s fall/winter season offers a variety of dance performances for all audiences, including flamenco, hip-hop and a mix of traditional and modern dance direct from India. Performers include professional companies hosted by RIC’s Performing Arts Series and the RIC Dance Company, as well as student artists whose performances particularly appeal to young audiences.

From Wednesday-Friday, Oct. 21-23, the RIC Dance Company holds its Annual Mini Concert for K-12 Students. The program starts at 10 a.m. in Sapinsley Hall and is free for K-12 students in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Call (401) 456-9791 for reservations.

On Friday, Oct. 23, members of the Arch Dance Company will be special guests of the RIC Dance Company. This New York-based troupe, under the artistic direction of Jennifer Archibald, deliver contemporary high-energy performances that incorporate classical training, street, funk and lyrical dance. Company dancers are required to defy gravity and lyrically fly across space, displaying both the hard edge of street dance and the fluidity of classical technique. Staged in Sapinsley Hall, the performance begins at 7:30 p.m. (admission $15).

Compañia Flamenca José Porcel and their live orchestra appear on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 7:30 p.m., hosted by the RIC Performing Arts Series. Porcel and company display classic flamenco as danced by the great masters. Costumes and music are also faithfully recreated, representing the purity of flamenco’s golden age. (Admission $35.)

The Bollywood Masala Orchestra and Dancers of India, a presentation by the Performing Arts Series, appears in Roberts Hall auditorium on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m. Masala offers song and dance accompanied by both Indian and Western instruments. (Admission $35.)

The final production of the season by the RIC Dance Company is titled “It’s All Your Parents’ Fault: A Theatrical Movement Experience.” Productions will be held Dec. 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall (admission $15).

The RIC Dance Company provides high-quality educational dance and performance programming for RIC students and for the Rhode Island community. Its programs and events fulfill a twofold purpose by providing RIC students with highly professional dance training and performance opportunities and by providing the larger RIC community with performance and educational programs that foster an appreciation of contemporary dance. The company’s hallmark has been its involvement with the local, regional and national dance communities.

RIC’s Performing Arts Series has been committed to providing the surrounding community with professional performances of the highest caliber in dance, music and theatre, all at affordable prices. The roster of events – eclectic and internationally diverse – reflect the series’ principle that attending and participating in the performing arts is integral to broadening our perception of ourselves and the world.
