Providence, R.I. – In celebration of Rhode Island Manufacturing Week, Sept. 28 to Oct. 2, and Manufacturing Day, Oct. 2, the Rhode Island College Design, Innovation and Advanced Manufacturing Center will offer tours and demonstrations of modern manufacturing systems on Tuesday, Sept. 29, from 12:30-5 p.m., Whipple Hall, Room 101, 600 Mt. Pleasant Ave., Providence. This event, which is co-sponsored by RIC and the Rhode Island STEM Center, is free and open to the public.

“On Manufacturing Day, businesses and industries will get to know what’s happening in manufacturing education at RIC and will have the opportunity to take a look at the type of high-end equipment we have in our lab,” said RIC Professor of Technology Education Charles McLaughlin. RIC’s modern manufacturing systems include robotic arms, 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC routing (a computer-controlled cutting machine) and the most advanced 3D measurement technology by FARO. Demonstrations will be given throughout the day.

“These demonstrations are a great STEM teaching tool that will engage middle and high school students,” added STEM Center Director Carol Giuriceo, noting that Central Falls and Mount Pleasant High School students will be among the attendees.

Manufacturing Day is supported by thousands of manufacturers across the country who will host facility tours and presentations designed to showcase modern manufacturing technology.

To mark the event, Gov. Gina Raimondo declared the week of Sept. 28 to Oct. 2 as Rhode Island Manufacturing Week.

“Rhode Island College is pleased to be a part of the advancements in manufacturing being promoted in Rhode Island under the leadership of Gov. Raimondo,” said RIC President Nancy Carriuolo.

Other manufacturing events in the state include:

  • The second annual Manufacturing Career Awareness Expo hosted by the Rhode Island Manufacturers Association (RIMA) on Wednesday, Sept. 30, from 2-7:30 p.m. at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet in Cranston.
  • A RIMA-sponsored, business-networking reception at the historic Slater Mill Museum in Pawtucket on Thursday, Sept. 24, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
