PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The spring season at the Edward Mitchell Bannister Gallery opens on Thursday, Jan. 22, with “New Works by Roger Tibbetts.” Tibbetts is professor of art at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. His show will be curated by James Montford, Bannister gallery director. This exhibit runs through Feb. 20, with an artist reception on Thursday, Feb. 19, at 5 p.m. Bannister Gallery is located on the Rhode Island College campus, Roberts Hall, 600 Mt. Pleasant Ave., Providence.

A group exhibit, featuring sculptors Emily Duke, Brian Kakas, Yiu-Keung Lee, Sarah Lindley and Blake Williams, will run from March 3-28 and is titled “Perspectives/National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts.” This exhibit will be curated by Diana Pancioli.

New York-based artist Sook Jin Jo will hold a solo exhibit – “Transformations” – from April 2-23. Born in Korea, Jo produces sculptural assemblages, installations, public works, drawings, collages, photographs and performances. She has exhibited extensively, both nationally and internationally and is the recipient of numerous awards and museum collections. This exhibit will be curated by Professors of Art Lisa Russell and Heemong Kim.

From April 30 through May 15 RIC undergraduate and graduate art students will showcase their work in a student exhibition.

And the final exhibit of the season, “Wordsmith/Metalsmith,” curated by Sara Picard, will showcase contemporary jewelry and metalwork by artists Boris Bally, Kristin Beeler, Robert Ebendorf, Mary Hallam Pearse, Liz Hamman, Katherine Richmond and Keith Lo Bue. This exhibit runs from Tuesday, May 19, through Friday, June 19, with an opening reception on May 19 at 5 p.m.

Bannister Gallery was created by the Rhode Island College Department of Art to function as a teaching resource. Exhibits are selected by a rotating body of faculty to highlight aspects of their courses and various disciplines. Focus is on the presentation of contemporary art by local, regional and internationally renowned artists, including site-specific, electronic and video projects. James Montford is director of the gallery.

Gallery programming is presented through the cooperation of the Department of Art Gallery Committee, the RIC Art Club, the Artist Co-Op, the Performing and Fine Arts Commission, the Committee for Lectures and Films, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the E.M. Bannister Society and the RIC Foundation.
