Pro Dignitate Foundation for Human Rights
In its ongoing effort to expand its study of and outreach to the Lusophone diaspora around the world, IPLWS has undertaken a challenging project in collaboration with the Pro Dignitate Foundation for Human Rights in Lisbon, Portugal. The project is dedicated to promoting the use of the community radio as an instrument of the promotion of peace in Lusophone Africa while connecting with local Portuguese-speaking communities here in the United States.
Recognizing that both share common interests in the dissemination of the Portuguese language and Lusophone cultures and the value of human rights, Rhode Island College and the Pro Dignitate Foundation entered into an agreement of cooperation on September 23, 2010. The signing of the protocol took place at the Peace Radio Inaugural Banquet at Rhode Island College signaling the beginning of the three year commitment to this project. The document was signed by Former First Lady of the Republic of Portugal Maria Barroso Soares, President of the Pro Dignitate Foundation and Dr. Nancy E. Carriuolo, President of Rhode Island College.
Activities under the agreement include conferences, workshops, symposia and training of Portuguese-speaking journalists of the Lusophone diaspora.
Instituto Camões

RIC President Nancy Carriuolo, and Vice-Consul of Portugal in Providence J. Leonel Teixeira representing the Instituto Camões signed a protocol of cooperation on Dec. 13, 2011 at Rhode Island College. The agreement recognizes that both RIC and the Instituto Camões are committed to the promotion of the teaching and dissemination of the Portuguese language and Lusophone culture and agree to work together toward that end.
RIC's commitment, through the Department of Modern Languages and the Institute for Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies, includes disseminating knowledge about Portuguese Studies and the Portuguese-speaking world through courses, conferences or meetings; to organize guide and stimulate research in Portuguese and Lusophone Studies; to encourage exchanges with similar institutions or others who share the same goals; to encourage exchange of teachers, researchers, postgraduates and students; and to raise awareness among teachers researchers, postgraduates and students of Portuguese and Lusophone Studies about the possibilities of distance learning through the Centro Virtual Camões
In turn, the Instituto Camões commits to support the promotion and dissemination of the Portuguese language and Lusophone cultures in the Department of Modern Language and the Institute for Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies at RIC by providing teaching/ learning materials of Portuguese as a Foreign Language and resources about Portuguese language, literature, culture, history and heritage; audio-visual materials and the possibility of research scholarships and academic prizes.
University of the Azores
Formalizing a working relationship that has developed over the past few years, Rhode Island College and the University of the Azores entered into an agreement of cooperation that will enhance opportunities for students and faculty on both sides of the Atlantic. Dr. Jorge Medeiros, Rector (President) of the University of the Azores and Dr. Nancy Carriuolo, President of RIC, signed the protocol in the presence of administrators, faculty and students on February 22, 2012 at Rhode Island College.
Since 2009, IPLWS has sponsored attendance of Rhode Island College students of Portuguese Studies at the Curso de Verão (Summer Course) at the University of the Azores for academic credit at Rhode Island College. Rhode Island College also hosted professors from the University of the Azores during a forum on "The Transatlantic Relationship between the Azores and Rhode Island." Both institutions are looking forward to more exchange opportunities for students and faculty.
