PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rhode IslandCollege announces a full lineup of arts events this spring: 17 music concerts, five dance productions, five art exhibits and two theatre productions.

The first event is a Bannister Gallery exhibition, “Visual Metaphors, New Paintings,” in which RISD faculty member Wendy Seller combines Photoshop and Illustrator digital manipulation with traditional oil paint. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, Jan. 23, at 5 p.m. with an artist talk at 6:30 p.m. The exhibit runs through Feb. 19 and is free and open to the public. Other exhibitions at Bannister include: “Parallels: Investigations of Geometry and Gesture,” a group show running Feb. 27-March 22 and curated by Juan Jose Barboza-Gubo, and RIC Associate Professor Richard Whitten’s “Sabbatical Exhibition,” running from April 1-19.

A season filled with international dance kicks off on Thursday, March 6, at 7:30 p.m., when Dance Brazil brings a fusion of live Afro-Brazilian music, contemporary dance and “capoeira” – a traditional dance/martial arts form that originated in Africa and evolved in colonial Brazil as a means of fighting enslavement. Reserved seating for the production, staged in the auditorium in Roberts Hall, is $35.

In “Phoenix-Rising,” the Japanese-based TAO dance company combines athleticism with explosive Taiko drumming. The performance takes place on Thursday, March 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium in Roberts Hall. Reserved seating is $35.

On Tuesday, April 29, the award-winning Alonzo King LINES Ballet company explores movement from a global perspective. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium in Roberts Hall. Reservedseating is $35.

A highlight of the spring’s musical offerings are duo-pianists John and Richard Contiguglia, identical twins who have collaborated since the age of five. Their performance on Sunday, April 13, at 2:30 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall, includes “A Four-Hand Tribute to Schubert.” Reserved seating is $35.

Also in April, the Muir String Quartet returns for its 21st season, performing works by Haydn, Kreisler and Mendelssohn on Monday, April 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall. Reserved seating is $35.

Musical offerings continue into the month of May, including RIC student ensembles: the annual Bon Voyage Choral Concert on Friday, May 2, at 8 p.m. ($10 admission); and the RIC OperaWorkshop on Sunday, May 11, at 7 p.m. ($10 donation). Both events will be held in Sapinsley Hall.

Theatre at RIC this spring consists of student productions of “Arsenic and Old Lace,” Feb. 19–23 at the Forman Theatre, and the musical “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” April 24-27 at the auditorium in Roberts Hall. General admission for both productions is $15.
