RIC’s First GreenDependence Scholar
Rhode Island College sophomore John Fulton is the first recipient of a $10,000 GreenDependence scholarship established at Rhode Island College this past fall by the National Grid Foundation, the philanthropic arm of National Grid.
RIC is one of five colleges across the country selected to serve as pilot institutions for this scholarship.
Fulton said he was “honored” to receive he scholarship. “It’s great to see Rhode Island College and a private organization working together for future generations,” he said. “I hope the scholarship continues.”
Fulton is a nursing major who holds a grade point average of 3.8. He will receive $3,000 a year in his sophomore, junior and senior years. Additionally, he will receive a $1,000 grant to support a senior-year community service-learning project of his choosing in the area of sustainability. He said he has not yet decided on the project.
Jim Murphy, coordinator of RIC’s sustainability program, was on the faculty committee that selected Fulton. He said, “John is the type of student who is not afraid of hard work, which is refreshing in this day and age. His work ethic shows in his schoolwork and in his role as vice president of the RIC Environmental Club. He is also a sustainability advocate who leads by example in all that he does.”
Applicants for the GreenDependence scholarship must be full-time students, with a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA and demonstrated financial need. Applicants must also submit essays (maximum 500 words), describing their interest in green/sustainability issues and how this scholarship will help them achieve personal and educational goals.
As an alternative, applicants may submit a short video describing their interests in green/sustainability issues. Preference is given to students of color.
