PROVIDENCE, R.I. – “Humans and Bees: A Look at the Global Bee Crisis,” represents the first offering in “Transiting to Sustainable Cultures,” a new ecomedia series co-sponsored by Rhode Island College and the Apeiron Institute for Sustainable Living.

Free and open to the public, the program takes place Thursday, Nov. 13, at 6:30 p.m., Clarke Science, Room 128, Rhode Island College, 600 Mt. Pleasant Ave., Providence.

“Humans and Bees” explores the links between our environment and these valuable pollinators. The program begins with a screening of award-winning filmmaker Taggart Siegel’s “Queen of the Sun: What Are the Bees Telling Us?” The film examines the dwindling bee population through the eyes of beekeepers, scientists and philosophers.

The program also includes a talk by media artist and ecocritic Ju-Pong Lin, who will explore artistic works made through collaboration with bees.

The new series, know as “Transitioning to Sustainable Cultures: An Ecomedia Series,” is designed to raise awareness of climate change, to connect grassroots environmental efforts and to create resilient communities. Promoting education and community service through the use of environmental-themed films, videos and media arts, the series encourages public dialogue on the four domains of sustainability: ecology, economics, politics and culture.

The ecomedia series continues on Dec. 13, at 3 p.m. at the Columbus Theatre, 270 Broadway, Providence, with a the screening of two short films: “Sacred Spirit of Water” and “Kahsatstenhsera: Indigenous Resistance to Tar Sands Pipelines.” These films arefocused on the cultural dimension of sustainability.  Additional programs are in the planning stages for the spring of 2015.
