Rhode Island College Literacy / Dyslexia Endorsement Courses
The Feinstein School of Education and Human Development is proud to announce that RIC is now a Science of Reading and Structured Literacy Professional Learning Provider for educators in Rhode Island. A collaboration between the Departments of Elementary and Special Education, three courses were developed by Dr. Natasha Feinberg and Dr. Cara McDermott-Fasy. As of March 9, 2021, these courses were approved by the RI Department of Education and meet the requirements of
the Right to Read Act.
The RIC Literacy/Dyslexia Endorsement courses provide current educators, practitioners, and other interested individuals the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills related to the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy. Coursework focuses on prevention, early intervention, and remediation of Dyslexia and other language-based learning differences through the provision of appropriate and effective evidence-based practices across a Multi-Tiered System of Supports framework.
Who is eligible to take these courses? Courses are designed for current educators, related service professionals, and other interested individuals. As a RIDE approved provider, educators and practitioners completing this pathway will satisfy the proficiency requirements of the RI Right to Read Act and be eligible for the Literacy/Dyslexia Endorsement.
When are these courses offered? Courses for this new program will begin this summer 2021!

Summer Session 1 Course Descriptions:
Two courses will run in summer Session One for 6 weeks and classes will meet synchronously online twice a week. Students are expected to work with an elementary or middle school-aged student outside of the class sessions, applying knowledge and skills related to foundations, assessment, and evidence-based interventions.
READ 534 Foundations in Literacy (3 credits)
This course offers an overview of the components of literacy instruction. Included is a survey of phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing definitions and instruction. Foundational terminology/understanding such as "orthographic mapping," "scientific literacy," and "structured literacy" forms the basis of the Literacy/Dyslexia Endorsement.
SPED 546 Dyslexia in Schools: Assessment and Identification (3 credits)
Principles and procedures of effective assessment for the screening, identification, and intervention of students with Dyslexia and other language-based learning differences are addressed.
Summer Session 2 Course Description:
One course will run in Summer Session Two for 6 weeks. This class will meet Monday through Thursday from 8am-12 pm at a partnership school. Two hours of each session will be dedicated to practicum which will take the form of a literacy clinic serving elementary and middle school-aged students.
READ 629: Literacy Practicum for Assessment and Intervention (6 credits)
Emphasis is on the assessment of and intervention for dyslexia and reading difficulties. Students apply knowledge of assessment, data analysis, and literacy intervention in a six-week summer literacy clinic under the supervision of FSEHD faculty.
How much will these courses cost?
The Literacy/Dyslexia Endorsement at Rhode Island College consists of a three-course sequence (12 credits) offered over the course of the summer. The current rate for continuing education courses offered in the summer is $305 per credit plus fees.
