Campus Involvement Opportunities

Free Period

Every Wednesday from 12:30pm - 2:00pm is Free Period, a time-slot during which classes are not scheduled so that students can get involved on campus. Many student clubs and organizations meet and many campus-wide events occur during this time.

Clubs and Organizations

The most obvious way to get involved is to join a student club or organization! It can be a great way to plan events, meet people with similar interests, and even enhance your resume. There are more than 70 groups to choose from:

  • media groups
  • cultural awareness groups
  • groups associated with academic majors and community service

For an updated list of current organizations, please visit the Student Organizations page.

Starting a New Student Organization

Have a great idea for a student organization at Rhode Island College?  Consider starting a new group!  The process can be a lot of work, but it often leads to a very rewarding experience.  The process requires that you work with both Student Activities and Student Community Government, Inc.; if you have questions along the way you can contact Interim Assistant Director, Student Activities Mike Giacalone at mgiacalone@ric.edu or the SCG Secretary at secretary@ricscg.org.

Steps for Starting a New Student Organization

  1. Review the list of current student organizations at http://www.ric.edu/student-activities/Pages/Student-Organizations-Directory.aspx to ensure that a similar organization is not already in existence.
  2. Find at least three other students who are interested in joining the organization and a proposed faculty or professional staff advisor.
  3. Submit the Intent to Form a New Student Organization form, which asks for information about the organization's purpose, activities, and possible members.
  4. Once contacted by Student Activities or SCG confirming the acceptance of the Intent form, submit the organization's constitution to the SCG Secretary.  The Secretary can provide a model constitution upon which to base the new organization's constitution.
  5. Meet with the SCG Student Organizations Committee and/or Parliament to answer questions about the organization.  Please note that this process may take a few weeks.  The SCG Secretary will let you know which meeting you will need to attend.
  6. Receive approval from Parliament.
  7. Submit the online organization officer list to Student Activities at http://www.ric.edu/student-activities/pages/Student-Organization-Registration.aspx.
  8. Submit a signed advisor agreement, and president and treasurer affidavits to SCG in Student Union 401.
  9. Meet with the Program Coordinator Student Activities to review policies related to Student Organizations.
