Our mission is to offer comprehensive personal and professional development for educational professionals interested in the teaching, learning, and human development of individuals with special needs. The
undergraduate and
graduate programs prepare educational professionals to provide instructional and behavioral/social support to individuals with special needs. Each of the programs within the department is designed to prepare educational professionals to appreciate and understand the unique abilities, interests, and talents of individuals with special needs, and develop proficiency in working with them and their families. The faculty of the Department of Special Education believes this understanding is the basis for constructive educational involvement with individuals with special needs: active participation in their lives, and effective social advocacy on their behalf.

Recent Graduate, Ayana Bass, Presents at CEC Convention!
Ayana Bass, a recent graduate of the Elementary/Elementary Special Education program at Rhode Island College (RIC) and a McNair Scholar, recently presented at this year's annual convention of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), or CEC LIVE 2021. Her presentation entitled Where is the Rhode Island Teacher Pipeline? An Exploration of Interest and Barriers for Paraprofessionals was part of a Data Blitz session on Thursday, March 11, 2021. Since completing her studies at RIC, Ayana accepted a position as Program Manager/Education Partner at the Equity Institute in Providence, RI. She was also recently accepted into the Urban Education Policy graduate program at Brown University where she was awarded a fellowship to support her studies and research.
