What is coaching?
Coaching is a non-evaluative, ongoing process in which a coach observes and provides feedback to another individual or group, targeting the knowledge, skills, and interventions that are essential to facilitate successful implementation of MTSS. MTSS concepts and skills are introduced in training; however the transfer of knowledge to classroom settings occurs through supportive, reflective coaching. Coaching is the bridge that expands content acquired through training and develops specialized skills, increasing the likelihood of successful implementation.

Why is coaching beneficial?
Research shows that professional development models that use coaches effectively are associated with an increase in the number of educational personnel who successfully implement the new practice (Joyce and Showers, 2002). Coaches are critical to successful and sustained implementation. Given the important role of coaches, RI MTSS will provide ongoing training and technical assistance to support coaches in the development of MTSS content-specific expertise as well as coaching skills.
