Is there a requirement to live on campus?
To live on campus you must be enrolled as a full-time matriculated student at Rhode Island College.
How many students live on campus?
Rhode Island College houses up to 1,198 students.
What is the process to live on campus?
Students must be an accepted student to Rhode Island College. The student must pay a $200 deposit then sign an electronic version of the Housing contract. If the student is under 18 at the time of signing the contract a legal guardian will be required to sign a copy of the contract.
How much is the deposit?
The Housing deposit is $200 per academic year. The deposit is non-refundable. Students are able to cancel their contract by August 1st without any additional financial responsibility.
How do I pay my deposit?
Deposits can be paid online on the student's MyRIC Online Services account by credit card. A
step by step tutorial on how to pay your Housing Deposit online can be downloaded as a pdf. Credit card payments will have a convenience fee of 2.75% added to each card transaction. There is no fee for electronic check processing. For more information about how to pay the deposit, please view the Bursar's Office page about Payment Information located at

Is there a deadline to pay the deposit?
Current residents of Rhode Island College Housing are able to pay their housing deposits to secure a room for the next academic year starting January 5th until the March 19th. Residents who pay the deposit by the deadline will be eligible to participate in the first round of room selection.
Incoming freshmen students can pay their deposit starting February 1st until June 15th. Incoming freshmen students who pay their deposit by June 15th will be guaranteed housing placement. Incoming freshmen can pay a deposit after June 15th; however, they will be placed on a first come first serve basis.
How do I electronically sign my Housing Contract?
Similar to the terms and conditions for software and mobile apps by clicking “Agree” to the terms and conditions of the agreement will electronically sign your Housing Contract. Please follow the “How to sign your Housing Contract and Questionnaire”

I am under 18 and need my legal guardian to sign a copy of the contract, how do I get a copy of the signature page?
A copy of the Housing contract can be downloaded at
http://www.ric.edu/residential-life/Pages/Policies.aspx. Please download the contract and print the signature page.
Only the signature page needs to be returned for students under 18 at the time they filled out the contract and Roommate Questionnaire. Please have the student’s legal guardian filled out the signature page and send back in one of the following ways:

Is there designated first year housing?
First year students can be assigned to Penfield Hall Double rooms, Sweet Hall and Willard Hall. Sweet and Willard Hall are all first year buildings, while half of Penfield Hall are reserved for upperclassmen.
How are room assignments made?
For first-year students, rooms are assigned based on the criteria received through the survey students fill out over the summer prior to their first semester on-campus. First year students are able to fill out their survey starting May 1st.
Upper-class students who are returning to on-campus living must pay a room deposit. Room deposits can be made from January 5th until March 19th. Students who pay a deposit will receive a selection time in early April which will allow them to choose a room.
When will first year students receive room assignments?
First year students will receive their room assignment in mid-July.
When can I move in*?
Move-in days for Fall 2020 will occur August 27-31 in timed blocks. More specific information will be sent to your RIC email.

Are phones supplied?
Each Residence Hall suite except Sweet Hall is equipped with a phone that can make local calls.
Can I have my car on campus?
All students who live on campus are allowed to bring vehicles. Students are asked to register their vehicles at Campus Police located in Browne Hall.
Can I have guests in my room?
Students may have overnight guests in their room. Guests must be signed in at the front desk by 7pm of every evening. Guests must also be escorted at all times by their resident host. For more information on our guest policy please click

What happens if I get locked out of my room or lose my key?
In the event that a resident becomes locked out of their room, they can go contact one of the designated services below to be issued a key to access their room. In the event a student loses their keys they will be responsible for the appropriate charges.
Weekdays 8:30 A.M. to 7:00 P.M.: Go to the Office of Residential Life & Housing in Penfield Hall.
Weekdays 7:00 P.M. to 8:30 A.M.: Contact the RA on Duty in your building.
24-hour on the Weekend, Holidays, and Emergency Closings: Contact the RA on Duty in your building.
Can I have my own personal refrigerator?
Students can have personal refrigerators but they cannot exceed 4.6 cubic feet.
Where are the laundry facilities and how much does it cost?
Each building is equipped with a laundry facility. The cost to wash is $1.50 and dry is $1.75 each. There is a discounted price for using campus points which can be loaded onto your student ID. Below is a list of laundry facility locations per building.
Browne Hall: 1st Floor next to the lower lounge
Penfield Hall: Ground Floor
Sweet Hall: The end cap of every floor
Thorp Hall: 1st Floor next to the main lounge
Weber Hall: Ground floor
Willard Hall: Attached to the Recreation Room
Am I required to have a meal plan?
Residents are required to select one of the available meal plans. For more information about meal plans and their costs, please visit the
Donovan Dining Center website.
How much does on-campus housing cost?
Please review the information at the
Bursar's Office website. Prices do vary based on your selected meal plan and room placement. The rates are calculated for the entire academic year. To find the rate per semester, please divide the amount in half.
How do I cancel my Housing Contract?
The Housing Contract is for the entire academic year. Students can cancel their Housing Contract prior to August 1st and will forfeit their $200 deposit.
Students can apply for an appeal after the August 1st deadline; however, the student may be held responsible for the entire year contract if the appeal is not granted.
I am withdrawing from Rhode Island College, what paperwork do I need to complete?
Residents are required fill proper paperwork with the Office of Student Life to officially withdrawal from the college. Residents then must come to the Office of Residential Life and Housing and fill out the required withdrawal paperwork from Housing. The Housing contract is an entire academic year contract; residents may not be released from their finical responsibility. An appeals process is available for students who cancel their contract. Appeals are not guaranteed to be approved.
Am I able to stay during break times?
The Residence Halls are closed during school breaks and residents should plan accordantly to vacate during these times. The Office of Residential Life and Housing may offer extended break housing at an additional cost. However, housing during break periods is not guaranteed.

How do I switch rooms?
Residents are able to submit room change requests on the MyRIC Student Housing portal. The first 2 weeks of the semester, residents are not able to move as there is a room freeze in place. Residents can submit requests during this time; however, they will not be acted on. Once your request is submitted, you may not hear back from us until we have the ability to grant the request. Please understand that room change approval is based on availability and in the order in which your request was received. We cannot guarantee room requests will be granted; however, we will try to accommodate as many as possible based on availability. Please do not resubmit the Room Change unless your preferences have changed or you no longer want the initial request. All requests for a change must be submitted using the Room Changes Request form online. Submitting multiple Room Change Requests will not change your place in line.
