Degree Information

B.A. Modern Languages/Concentration in Portuguese Studies

The Concentration in Portuguese Studies consists of 47-48 credit hours, starting in PORT 201, 202, and followed by 25-26 credit hours of additional courses in Portuguese at the 300-level and 400-level, 8 credits in another language, 6 credits in Modern Languages Applied Linguistics and the Modern Languages Seminar. B.A. Modern Languages / Concentration in Latin American Studies

The Concentration in Latin American Studies consists of 40-43 credit hours, 15-16 of which must be completed in the Portuguese Studies Program starting in PORT 201, 202, and followed by 7-8 credit hours of additional courses in Portuguese at the 300-level or above. See the Academic Rhode map here.

Minor in Portuguese

The minor in Portuguese consists of 18-20 credit hours, as follows: PORT 115, PORT 201, 202, and 6-8 credit hours of additional courses in Portuguese at the 300-level or above.

Dual Programs with FSEHD [Feinstein School of Education and Human Development]

World Languages Education B.A./Concentration in Portuguese: Along with completing required courses in FSEHD, students electing a concentration in Portuguese must complete the following courses with a minimum grade point average of 3.00: PORT 201, 202, 301, 302, 304, 305, 420, 460; plus two courses in another language for a total of 38 credit hours. See the Academic Rhode map here.

Certificate of Undergraduate Studies in World Languages Education/Portuguese: Current undergraduates in World Languages Education with another language concentration may add this C.U.S. for a second language certification. Certified World Language Teachers (already holding a B.A. from a regionally accredited institution) seeking a second language certification must submit an application to the program director. Total Portuguese credit hours: 24. 

World Languages Education M.A.T./Portuguese: Required courses in FSEHD in Foundations, Professional Education and Pedagogy plus fifteen credit hours of courses at the graduate level in Portuguese for a total of 46 credit hours.​

Programs with PORTUGUESE Electives

Youth Development Program: (Educational Studies Department): This interdisciplinary major includes a mandatory approved Minor. Portuguese is an approved Minor.

International Nongovernmental Organizations Studies (INGOS): (Political Science Department): Certificate OR Minor: 4 elective credits in Portuguese (PORT 304 or PORT 305).

Global Studies Program (History Department): 4 elective credits in Portuguese (PORT 305).

Premedical, Predental, Preoptometry, Preveterinary Preparation Programs: (Biology Department): "It is strongly recommended that students take intermediate or advanced courses in modern foreign languages."
