Internships
Employers increasingly seek job candidates who have practical experiences that compliment their academic training. In surveys, many employers name internships first among the factors the look for in a prospective employee.
The Political Science Department offers two distinct semester-long internship courses. Each course earns four academic credits. In addition to spending 120 hours on-site at the internship, students also meet weekly in a classroom setting to discuss their experience and put it in perspective.
Political Science 327 is the Internship in State Government. Under the auspices of the Rhode Island State Internship Program, the department offers a twelve-week internship every spring semester, placing students with individual members of the Rhode Island state legislature or with members of the executive and judicial branches of state government.
Political Science 328 offers Field Experiences in the Public Sector. Every fall, spring, and summer the department offers a twelve-week internship for students in political science, public administration, justice studies, gerontology, and other programs. Students are placed in federal, state, and local government agencies; in private sector public service organizations; and in organizations engaged in campaigns or political advocacy.
