Math Competency Requirement

The Math Competency Requirement is a prerequisite for all college level mathematics and lab science courses.  This requirement must be fulfilled before completing 15 credits at the college or a hold will be placed on your account preventing you from registering for courses.

There are multiple ways to meet the requirement:

  1. Appropriate placement on RIC's Math Placement Exam (see Math Placement below)
  2. Successful completion of Math 010 or equivalent
  3. Transferring in a course equivalent to Math 120
  4. Transferring in a course equivalent to Math 177 or higher at RIC
  5. Classic Accuplacer scores (test date prior to August 2018)Arithmetic + Algebra score of at least 107

Arithmetic + Algebra score of at least 107

or

Algebra score of at least 57

If you took the Classic Accuplacer at another school and met the minimum score requirements, please have the scores sent from your previous school to testscores@ric.edu.

Math Placement Exam FAQ

It is very important that students begin their college mathematics coursework at the appropriate level.  All students will be required to take a mathematics placement exam for proper placement into their mathematics courses.

What is the placement exam?

It is a timed exam used to determine the appropriate math course for your current level of preparation. Use of a calculator is not permitted.

Do all students have to take the placement exam?

Yes, regardless of courses taken in high school and standardized test scores.

What material will be on the exam?

The exam ranges from Pre-Algebra to Calculus. A printable practice test can be found here: Download Paper Exam.

An online version of the test can be attempted ONCE at https://ric.placementexam.com/onlinepractice. The online practice exam is not scored and does not count towards your placement. You should not use any outside sources when taking the practice exam (including calculators, text books, people, the internet, etc.) and you should plan to do this all in one sitting. After 30 minutes of inactivity you will be logged out and not allowed back in.

It is highly recommended that you attempt the online practice exam prior to taking it in a proctored setting in order to get a sense of the answer format and type of question.

How will I know which course to take?

Upon completion of the exam, you will be placed into your initial mathematics course. Please note that although this may not be the course required by your major, successful completion should adequately prepare you for the required course.

Course Placements:

Level 0: Math 010 (non-credited course necessary to satisfy math competency)
Level 1: Math 120, 139*, 143, 240* (Placing in this level or greater means you have successfully completed the College Mathematics Competency Requirement.)
Level 2: Math 120, 139*, 143, 240*, 177*
Level 3: Math 120, 139*, 143, 240*, 177*, 209*
Level 4: Math 120, 139*, 143, 240*, 177*, 209*, 212*

*Math course that satisfies the General Education Mathematics requirement.

Is there a minimum requirement?

Yes. In addition to placing into the proper mathematics course, students must meet the College's Mathematics Competency Requirement. The requirement can be met by placing into a course above Math 010 or by earning a passing grade in Math 010. This requirement must be fulfilled before completing 15 credits at the college or a hold will be placed on your account preventing you from registering for courses.

If I don't meet the minimum requirement, will I be set back?

Not necessarily, but you will need to enroll in Math 010 in your first semester.

Are there non-math courses that require the Math Competency Requirement as a pre-requisite?

Yes. Aside from all college level math courses, students cannot register for Biology, Chemistry, and Economics courses until they meet the College Mathematics Competency Requirement. Also, programs like Nursing and Education require the competency for program eligibility.

How long will it take to receive my results?

You will know your placement immediately. They will be automatically added to your MyRIC account and you will be able to register for courses the following day (if registration is open). To view your results visit ric.placementexam.com/student.

In high school I received testing accommodations, am I able to use them for the placement test?

Yes. To request reasonable testing accommodations for a disability or medical condition, please contact the Rhode Island College Disability Services Center at 401-456-2776.  Once you have the proper documentation, please contact Megan DiBonaventura mdibonaventura@ric.edu to coordinate a testing time.  Note, reasonable accommodations do not include use of a calculator.
