Basic Baccalaureate Program for Second Degree Candidates
The baccalaureate degree program in nursing and the master's degree program in nursing at Rhode Island College is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (http://www.ccneaccreditation.org).
The BSN program for second degree candidates builds on the first baccalaureate degree and includes cognate and required nursing courses. Individualized plans of study are prepared upon application to the College. Second Degree Candidates are admitted to the College intending to major in nursing and apply to the School of Nursing for admission to the BSN program according to established admission criteria.
Students must consult with their advisor each semester before registering for courses.

Admission Requirements
Second degree candidates admitted to Rhode Island College must apply through the college's Office of Undergraduate Admissions. A plan of study is then formulated with the BSN program director.
Application
Nursing Program Application
Fall Application
Students who anticipate enrolling in the beginning nursing courses, NURS 220 and NURS 222 for the fall semester need to submit a completed Application to Nursing Program: Enrollment Form by April 15th of the preceding spring semester.
Spring Application
Students who anticipate enrolling in the beginning nursing courses, NURS 220 and NURS 222 for the spring semester need to submit a completed Application to the Nursing Program: Enrollment Form by October 15th of the preceding fall semester.
Admission Requirements for Application
- Submission of an Enrollment Form signed by the faculty advisor to the School of Nursing by October 15 or April 15 of the preceding semester.*
- Completion of the College Mathematics and Writing Requirements.**
- A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
- Completion of Biology 231, Chemistry 106, and Psychology 230, with a minimum grade of C and a minimum overall grade point average of 2.67 (B-) in these 3 courses.
* Students may apply to the Nursing Program no more than three times.

Application Process
- Complete the Application to Nursing Program: Enrollment Form. Applications can be obtained in the School of Nursing, FLS 155.
- Basic students should attach a student copy of their current RIC transcript.
- Transfer students must attach transcripts with grades for all courses taken elsewhere - an official or legible student copy is acceptable.
- Second Degree Candidates must attach a copy of their Signed Plan of Study.
- Make an appointment to meet with your faculty advisor in the School of Nursing and obtain his or her signature with date of application prior to submitting the application to the School of Nursing.
- Submit the signed and completed application with attached transcripts, or learning plan for second degree candidates, to the administrative secretary prior to the April 15th or October 15th deadline for applications.

BIOL 231 (Anatomy), PSYC 230 (Human Development) and CHEM 106 (General, Organic & Biological-Chemistry II) are prerequisites to Nursing courses. All cognates must be completed before junior year (NURS 340 courses). A grade of "C" or better in each cognate and nursing courses is required.

Note:
* Second degree students must petition to take NURS 220, NURS 222, NURS 223, and NURS 224 concurrently and will be granted on a space available basis.
** Summer course enrollment is limited to 16 students. The offering of summer courses is based on faculty availability and adequate student enrollments during the academic year.
Retention Criteria
Criteria for retention are:

All cognates must be completed before junior (intermediate) year.

A "C" grade or better in each nursing course completed.

A "C" grade or better in each cognate course.
Students in nursing must achieve a grade of C or better in all required nursing courses. One course in nursing may be repeated once. A student who receives two grades of less than C in required courses in nursing will be dismissed from the program.
If a student's performance in the practicum is considered to be unsatisfactory at any time during the practicum, the student will be notified with a written warning notice.
The faculty reserves the right to require withdrawal or dismissal from the Nursing Program of a student who gives evidence, academically or personally, of inability to carry out professional responsibilities in nursing. Any student dismissed from the program may appeal to the appropriate committee. For further information or clarification contact the Dean of the School of Nursing.
