Music Auditions

Auditions are required for all music majors at RIC.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are auditions needed?

Auditions are required for entrance into all music programs at RIC because we care about your success. Our programs are demanding, and it would be wrong to accept students into a program for which they do not show potential for success. An audition clearly reveals this.

Do I need to be admitted to RIC before I audition?

No. Please schedule your audition as soon as you can. However, it is to your advantage to also apply for admission as early as possible.

Do different music degrees have different audition standards?

Yes. The BM in Performance has the highest expectations, followed by the BM in Music Education, and the BA in Music.

What if I don't pass the audition into the degree I want?

We sometimes hear students audition for the Music Education or the Performance programs who, though they show potential, are not quite ready to be accepted into these majors. They may be accepted as music majors into the BA-Music program, with the opportunity to re-audition for the program of choice after one or two semesters at RIC. Fortunately, most music classes are the same for all incoming freshmen music majors.

What if I don't pass the audition for any music degree?

RIC is an excellent college, and we are proud of our programs in all areas. Students who do not pass the audition to be accepted as a music major are encouraged to find an academic major which is more suited to their strengths.

How do I schedule an audition?

Scheduling your audition is as easy as filling in a form. Click here to schedule your audition.

What should I perform at my audition?

Click here for a list of suggested audition repertoire.

What about accompanists?

Piano accompaniment is required for all vocalists and will be provided if requested. Accompaniment for instrumentalists is not required.

Who listens to my audition?

A committee of the music faculty will hear each audition.

What else do I need to do to apply to RIC?

To qualify for admission as a freshman or transfer student, all applicants must follow the general admission procedure of the college, which includes submitting a complete application to the Admissions Office. To learn more, click here.

Are music scholarships available at RIC?

Yes! Rhode Island College awards over $50,000 in talent-based music scholarships each year based on auditions, and all incoming music majors (including transfer students) are eligible. All awards are four-year, continuing scholarships that range from $750 per year to full tuition. The amount of each award may vary according to the talent level of the applicant and the needs of the Department.

Is there a separate audition for scholarships?

No, your entrance audition serves also as your scholarship audition.
