Background

Formerly a member of the American, Dallas, Cincinnati, and Amarillo Symphony Orchestras (Concertmaster), the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra, and the Harrington String Quartet, he has been on the faculty of SUNY Purchase, West Texas State University, and Artist in Residence at Dalhousie University (Halifax, Nove Scotia).

John Sumerlin is a Professor of Music at Rhode Island College, where he teaches applied violin and viola, leads the Rhode Island College Chamber Orchestra, and is Director of Strings. He performs with the Proteus String Quartet (RI College faculty) (proteusstringquartet.com), as a recitalist, with Musica Dolce, and as Concertmaster of the RI College Symphony Orchestra.

Sumerlin is also a composer, and his works have been premiered at the college. These include his opera, AIR, string quartet, 5 HAPPINESS, and chamber orchestra work PANAPHONE. These can all be heard via links on his website: johnsumerlin.com.
