Florence St. Jean
Background
Flo St. Jean, BM, MM, is well known in the New England vocal arts community as a teacher of voice and performance skills for classical, musical theatre, and popular music singers. She has taught at the Boston Conservatory and currently teaches applied voice for vocal performance, music education and musical theatre majors at Rhode Island College, where she has also taught classes in musical theatre singing and managing performance anxiety. Flo is the choral director at Bryant University, where she also works with the contemporary a cappella ensemble, The Bottom Line. She has presented masterclasses and workshops on vocal health, managing performance anxiety, and musical theatre singing for The Boston Conservatory, New England Conservatory, Rhode Island College, the University of Rhode Island, Salve Regina University, Providence Public Schools, The Music School of the Rhode Island Philharmonic, and the Rhode Island Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Her private teaching includes a specialty in rehabilitative work with singers recovering from vocal injuries. While her present focus is on teaching highly motivated students, Flo enjoyed success in performing both classical and popular styles of music. She brings those perspectives, along with extensive training and ongoing attention to continuing professional development, to her teaching in all genres. Her students have appeared with the Boston Pops, Boston Lyric Opera, Opera Providence, Goodspeed Opera House, Paper Mill Playhouse, in national tours including High School Musical, the Full Monty, and Mamma Mia!, and international tours including the 50th Anniversary tour of West Side Story, on cruise ships, in regional professional theatre, as contemporary performing artists, and on Broadway.
