Background

Chris currently serves as Associate Professor for the Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance at Rhode Island College. He is entering his eighth year as a Professor of Theatrical Design and Technical Direction. Other teaching credits are Scene Design Professor at Webster University Conservatory of Theatre Arts and Scene and Lighting Design at Forest Park Community College in St. Louis Missouri.

Chris lighting experience encompasses both architectural and theatrical lighting design. In addition to teaching Chris has produced lighting fixtures for projects at Sea World of Florida, Terrors of the Deep; and the Radisson Hotel in Cincinnati. He has designed and built scenic and display elements for the St. Louis Zoo, Dillards Department Store, Anheuser Busch, V.P. Fair (St. Louis) and Tracker Marine.

Since the inception of Abernathy Lighting Design, Chris has collaborated on current projects such as Chisholm Trail Heritage Center, Technology Center at Coalbrookdale, Ironbridge, and the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame.

Chris holds a MFA in Lighting Design from the University of Missouri at Kansas City and a BFA in Stage Design from Webster University. Chris enjoys guest speaking on design techniques and has done so for the Educational Theatre Association and for several area high schools.

Chris is a member of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT). ​
