Health and Physical Education Department

Interested in a career where you help others achieve an optimal level of health, fitness, or wellness?
We are the department to help you pursue your career goals!

The Department of Health and Physical Education offers innovative undergraduate and graduate programs for students interested in improving health status, and promoting wellness and fitness in school and/or community settings, which is inclusive, and serves children, youth, and adults across the lifespan.

Teacher Preparation. Health Education and Physical Education are integral parts of the total education of children from kindergarten through grade 12. Our programs lead to K-12 certification. Students develop the knowledge and skills to provide young people with the tools to become successful, health and physically literate. We offer the following programs leading to

Community and Public Health Promotion. Building on a public health foundation, students are prepared to influence the health of individuals and communities through interventions that include education initiatives, policy changes, and health promotion programs. Students acquire the knowledge and skills to promote health literacy and equity, and eliminate health disparities in community and public health settings.

Wellness and Exercise Science. The Wellness and Exercise Science (WES) program attracts students interested in using movement and applied science to improve individuals’ well-being and quality of life. The mission of this major is to provide students with a comprehensive curriculum that includes the essential knowledge, skills, and competencies to be reflective practitioners in their field.

Graduate Programs. Health education and health promotion efforts enhance the health and well-being of populations through education and prevention initiatives. The Rhode Island College Master of Education in Health Education prepares professionals to design, implement, and evaluate health promotion and health education in school and community and public health settings that address local, state, and national needs, and are culturally responsive.
