Honors Program
Gender and Women's Studies majors who have demonstrated superior academic ability are eligible to participate in the department's honors program and to earn their degree with Honors in Gender and Women's Studies. Students normally apply during their junior year and work on their honors project during their senior year. Students in the honors program work closely with a faculty advisor for two semesters, researching and writing an Honors Thesis.
Eligibility Requirements
- Major in Gender and Women's Studies
- Completion of at least four 300 level Gender and Women's Studies courses
- Minimum GPA of 3.25 in the Gender and Women's Studies major
- Overall GPA of at least 3.0
Process
- Students work with a faculty advisor and, during the second semester of the junior year, submit a preliminary proposal for an honors project to the department's Honors Committee. The Honors Committee, selected by the advisor and the student, will consist of the faculty advisor, 2 Gender and Women's Studies faculty members and a student from the Gender and Women's Studies program.
- Candidates whose proposals have been approved by the Honors Committee enroll in Gender and Women's Studies 490: Directed Study in the first semester of their senior year.
- Students will present a final proposal for the honors thesis to the Honors Committee.
- Candidates whose final proposals have been approved by the Honors Committee enroll in Gender and Women's Studies 491: Directed Study in the second semester of their senior year.
- At mid-semester the student and the Honors Committee will again convene to discuss the progress of the project.
- Candidates submit an Honors Thesis to the Honors Committee at the end of Gender and Women's Studies 491 to be assessed on a Pass, Pass with Revisions, or No Pass basis.
- The Honors Committee will meet with the candidate for a presentation of the final thesis project.
Evaluation
- Candidates must receive at least a B from their advisor in Gender and Women's Studies 490 in order to continue in the program.
- Candidates must maintain at least a 3.25 GPA in Gender and Women's Studies courses while enrolled in the program.
- Candidates are awarded degrees with the designation of Honors in Gender and Women's Studies only upon recommendation by the department's Honors Committee.
Reward
- The achievement of a degree with Honors in Gender and Gender and Women's Studies.
- The experience of in-depth research and writing in close consultation with a faculty advisor.
- The completion of a thesis, copies of which are bound and available electronically in Adams Library and in the Gender and Women's Studies department archives.
