The Film Studies program offers students the opportunity to explore all kinds of moving images from across history and from national and international perspectives. Students engage in the study of moving images as a discursive practice that incorporates film history, genre studies, aesthetics/style, cultural contexts, and film theory. Students also have the opportunity to work on mastering the art of filmmaking through a sequence of courses from screenwriting to preproduction to production and post-production, with the opportunity to create in multiple film forms such as narrative filmmaking, documentary, experimental cinema, and animation. Our courses focus on theory to practice, connecting the study of moving images to the making of moving images. Recent courses have included African-American Cinema, Coming-of-Age Films, Convergence Culture, Walt Disney, John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, Hollywood Film Scores, the Hollywood Studio System, Melodrama & Action Films, Middle Eastern Cinema, Monster Movies, Russian/Soviet Cinema, Stop-Motion Animation, Superhero Movies, and TV Screenwriting.
