Initial Certification Programs

FSEHD offers a range of Initial Certification Programs. The initial certification programs prepare students to teach in Pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. The programs are designed for anyone who does not yet have a certification or RI teaching license.

Admissions Requirements

Admission to any FSEHD Undergraduate Teacher Certification P​rogram requires:

  • Rhode Island College admission
  • completion of FSEHD requirements
  • completion of program specific requirements (dependent upon chosen program)
  • conditional admissions information can be found on the Admissions Requirements page

Community Based Programs

FSEHD offers a range of Community-Based Programs. The community programs, offered through the Early Childhood, Health and Physical Education, and Educational Studies Departments, prepare students to work in a broad range of community settings.

Admissions Requirements

Admission to any FSEHD Community Program requires:

  • Rhode Island College admission
  • completion of FSEHD requirements​
  • completion of program specific requirements (dependent upon chosen program)​

Post-Baccalaureate Programs

​Second Bachelor Degree

Program choices for second bachelors mirror the undergraduate program choices​ and are open to those who have earned a bachelor’s degree. The first step is to apply to RIC using the Common App. Once admitted to RIC applicants will meet with advisors to learn about plans of study, program coursework and FSEHD application requirements.

Applications to programs in the Feinstein School require admission to Rhode Island College AND completion of requirements detailed on the FSEHD Admissions Requirements page.

FSEHD Rhode Island Teacher Education Programs (RITE) and Admissions Process

Application to the RITE program is a stand-alone application to the Feinstein School. The RITE program is intended for those who wish to complete a certification-only program without completing a degree program. Subjects include: secondary education (Biology, Chemistry, English, French, General Science, History, Mathematics, Physics, or Social Studies) or all grades World Languages. A BA/BS degree in the subject to be taught is required for admission.

The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) M.A.T. Programs and Admissions Process

M.A.T. graduate programs in Elementary, Secondary English and Mathematics, All Grades Art, Music and World Languages Education lead to Initial Certification.
