Rhode Island College

Dear Rhode Island College Science
Faculty Member: Sigma Xi, the Scientific
Research Honor Society, was founded in 1886 at Cornell University. The Rhode Island College Chapter was
chartered in 1985 to honor student scientists and to support informal
interactions among the science faculty on campus. Sigma Xi has a long history as a scientific
honor society. In addition to public advocacy for science, Sigma Xi sponsors
research conferences, grants-in-aid for research, and distinguished
lectureships. The society’s “Value
Proposition” begins with the following text: Sigma Xi is an
international, multidisciplinary community of science and engineering
professionals dedicated to research excellence, to promoting public
engagement with science, and to fostering the next generation of researchers.
Through the recognition and honor of induction, Sigma Xi members join a
distinguished community of researchers. The longer statement
makes a compelling argument for participation in the organization. Current Members As near as I can tell, about
thirty members of the Rhode Island College faculty are members (active + inactive)
of Sigma Xi. See list below. Current officers are Eric Roberts, chair,
Jim Magyar, secretary, and Marc Lamontagne, treasurer. If you are a member
and not on the list, please let me know. Nominations Each year we nominate students
as Associate Members in Sigma Xi.
Normally students who are nominated are seniors who have participated
in scientific research and are looking forward to a career in science. Truly outstanding juniors are nominated
occasionally. The nomination form is
available here. It is recommended that the nominee fill out
the form so that the information is correct.
Please email the completed file to jmagyar@ric.edu.
With the form please submit the payment of $60 ($20 initiation fee + $40
dues for student member.) Colleagues who wish to be nominated as Full Members
should contact Jim Magyar or Marc Lamontagne for details. Nominations completed before the Poster
Session on April 22 can be recognized at that time. Poster Session The Sigma Xi Poster Session
will be part of the Spring Expo of Research and Creative Activity. Posters
will be displayed in Adams Library on Monday, April 22. We are encouraging science students to
present their posters in the 12:00-2:00 block, class schedule permitting. Many students who have displayed posters at
external venues have the opportunity to share their work with the College
community. See http://www.ric.edu/Center-for-Research-and-Creative-Activity/Pages/Events.aspx
for information and to sign up for the poster session (Deadline Friday, April
12.) James G. Magyar, Secretary April 9, 2019 |
