Middle School Certification

The certification program in middle school education is for students who wish to teach in a middle school. Students must be enrolled in the elementary education program and must fulfill the following requirements:

  1. Complete MLED 230, 331, and 332.
  2. Complete a student teaching experience in an elementary school (Grades 1-6).
  3. Complete the course requirements for an elementary education content major in one of the following areas: Science or Mathematics.

Requirements for Students Electing a B.A. in Elementary Education

Students must complete the required courses in elementary education and select a content major from one of the following: general science or mathematics. These content majors are directly relevant to a subject area taught in pre-K–6 and provide appropriate depth and academic rigor in the content area. The following content majors will total more than 120 credits and will take more than four years to complete:

CHEM 103 and 104  General Chemistry I & II  (8 cr)
CHEM 105 and 106   General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry I & II  (8 cr)

CHOOSE ONE from:
PSCI   212      Introduction to Geology  (4 cr)
PSCI   217      Introduction to Oceanography  (4 cr)
TWO 200 level or above courses from BIOL, CHEM, HSCI, PHYS or PSCI  (8 cr)

TOTAL - 32 (Does not include General Education requirements)

REQUIRED overall GPA in this content major = 2.50
