The Department of Elementary Education offers accredited academic programs that prepare teachers to function effectively in early childhood and elementary school teaching positions. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of teaching, and the translation of research and theory into actual classroom practice through extensive field placements.

For graduate students who are certified teachers, the department provides subject matter and pedagogical knowledge that will permit high levels of performance within school settings. It also provides a way for academically competent and highly motivated college graduates with a liberal arts background to enter the field of education.

A part of the department's commitment to professional education is to provide leadership and service to the educational community, especially to the state of Rhode Island and its educational agencies. The department supports faculty in the conduct of research and scholarship, particularly as it relates to improving school instruction.
