Background

Gerri August, a professor in the Feinstein School of Education and Human Development, joined the faculty of Rhode Island College in 2005. She is the Chair of the Department of Educational Studies and is on the faculty of the Joint PhD in Education. In her current work with teachers and teacher candidates, she explores the structural leverages of privilege and power in classrooms.

Research Interests

Dr. August's research interests include the practice of democratic, transformative pedagogy and the dysconscious bias of teachers/teacher candidates. She is particularly committed to critical discourse analysis of classroom conversations regarding race, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
