Secondary Education - Specialized

This alternative pathway to Secondary Education certification, which includes coursework in Special Education, was designed to meet the needs of the Teach for America population.

Admission Requirements

  1. A completed application form accompanied by a fifty-dollar nonrefundable application fee.
  2. B.A. from a regionally accredited college, with a minimum GPA of 3.0
  3. Acceptance in Rhode Island Teach for America.
  4. Successful completion of TFA Institute.
  5. Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate records.
  6. Professional Goals Essay
  7. Three letters of recommendation that address the academic ability and aptitude of the applicant
  8. Resume

Course Requirements

SED 511 Content and Pedagogy in Secondary Education 4 cr.
SPED 531 Universal Design for Educating all Students 3 cr.
SPED 501 Assessment of Students with Mild/Moderate Disabilities 3 cr.
SED 512 Field Practicum in Secondary Education 2 cr.
SED 523 Teaching Seminar in Secondary Education (NEW course; course previously taught as 580) 3 cr.

SED 506 Survey of Instructional Design – Transfer course from Delta State University; credit earned during TFA Summer Institute

3 cr.
SED 507 Instructional Design and Literacy – Transfer course from Delta State University; credit earned during TFA Summer Institute 3 cr.

Additional Secondary Special Education Certification Coursework only for those finishing completing Special Education certification:

SPED 424 Assessment, Curriculum, & Methodology for Adolescents & Young Adults with Mild/Moderate Disabilities at the Middle School & Secondary Levels            4 cr.
SPED 427 Career Exploration and Vocational Preparation of Middle School and Secondary Level Students with Disabilities 3 cr.
