Reasonable Housing Accommodations

In accordance with applicable federal and state laws, Rhode Island College will provide reasonable accommodations for students:

Housing accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis, taking the student’s medically documented need and prevailing standards for reasonable accommodations into consideration. Rhode Island College has established the following procedures to ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to Rhode Island College’s housing resources.

Requesting Reasonable Housing Accommodations

Once the RIC housing eligibility requirements are satisfied, download and carefully read the Informational Packet for Requesting Reasonable Housing Accommodations. This packet provides important information about the process, including instructions on filling out the Request for Reasonable Housing Accommodations, applicable deadlines and examples and descriptions of common housing accommodation requests.

Download and complete the Request for Reasonable Housing Accommodations. The student and their healthcare provider must complete Parts I and II of the application which must be returned to the Disability Services Center with the Authorization for Release of Information (Part III) signed by the student. Completed applications can be mailed to:

Rhode Island College Disability Services Center
600 Mt. Pleasant Ave.
Providence, RI 02908
ATTN: Reasonable Housing Accommodations

They can also be emailed to dsc@ric.edu or faxed to 401-456-9525. Faxed applications will be reviewed, however, the original documents must be sent by mail. Information provided to the Disability Services Center is kept confidential and will only be shared within the College as is necessary to evaluate the request.

Your request and supporting documentation will be reviewed by a committee consisting of representatives from the Disability Services Center, Office of Residential Life and Housing, Counseling Center, Health Services, and other administrators having knowledge of the accommodation process. Members include professionals from the medical, counseling, and disability field. The committee reviews requests in the order that they are received, in accordance with applicable deadlines.

* Please be aware that this process is separate from registering a disability for reasonable academic accommodations. Please visit the Disability Services Center’s Homepage for information about registering for reasonable academic accommodations.

** Because of the varied impact a disability can have on different major life activities, the Disability Services Center requires separate, specific documentation for each registration process (housing, academic, etc.).
