C.G.S. in Advanced Counseling

The Certificate in Graduate Studies - Advanced Counseling is a certificate program for students with a Master’s degree in counseling or a related field to meet academic requirements for licensure as a mental health counselor.

Program Info

The Certificate in Graduate Studies - Advanced Counseling is a certificate program which enables students who already have a Master's degree, which is fewer than 60 credits, to obtain 60 credits needed for licensure as a mental health counselor in the state of Rhode Island. Students will be able to take the number of credits they need for licensure. Core courses in counseling practica and internship (a total of 12 credits) will be required of all CGS candidates. Other credits are determined based on the needs of the candidate.

Program components include:

Determined in consultation with advisor 6 semester hours of advanced counseling skills 6 semester hours (1 year) internship seminar with 600 hours of fieldwork

Students receive extensive preparation in advanced counseling skills through practca and internship experiences. Students obtain internship placements in various clinical settings and work with a variety of client populations. Examples of internship settings include community mental health centers, adoption agencies, family service agencies, alternative education programs, psychiatric hospitals, children and adolescent residential programs, and other related social service agencies.

HOW DO I APPLY? Submit the following materials before the November 1 or March 1 deadline:

  1. A completed application accompanied by a $50 nonrefundable application fee.
  2. Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate records. RIC transcripts do not need to be requested.
    NOTE: A qualifying Masters degree is required for this program. The RI state Dept of Health requires that a qualifying Masters be in an "allied field" defined as counselor education, psychology, marriage and family therapy, counseling psychology, community mental health, education with a concentration in counseling or psychology.
  3. A professional goals essay.
  4. Performance based evaluation.
  5. Three letters of recommendation accompanied by candidate rating forms.
  6. A resume/CV.

Retention Requirements

  1. A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale. Grades below a B are not considered of graduate quality and are of limited application to degree work.
  2. A minimum grade of B in CEP 610, 611, 683, and 684. Students who receive a grade below a B in any of these courses must meet with the program director. If it is recommended that the student continue in the program, the student must retake the course.
  3. Failure to meet any one of the above requirements is sufficient cause for dismissal from the program.
  4. A satisfactory rating on the assessment portfolio.
