Medical Imaging Programs

The mission of Lifespan School of Medical Imaging is to work collaboratively with technologists and other healthcare professionals to prepare students with entry level employment skills to meet the needs of the community. The school offers a variety of clinical settings to diversify and enhance student learning and networking in its communities of interest.

The BS in Medical Imaging includes concentrations leading to certification in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Nuclear Medicine Technology (NMT), RT Computed Tomography, Medical Imaging Management or Radiologic Technology. Regardless of the ultimate choice, all students begin as Medical Imaging Intended Majors.

After completing the majority of the general education and cognate​ courses students must choose which modality (concentration) they would like to pursue and then must submit a formal application to the School of Medical Imaging in order to be considered for entry into the clinical education program. Students cannot begin taking the specialized imaging courses until they are formally accepted into a clinical program.

Instructions for applying to the clinical program are included in the RADT 201 Orientation to Medical Imaging course.

Due to the complexity of the program options and the requirement for a second application it is absolutely critical that all students consult with their advisor frequently.

Clinical education is held at Rhode Island Hospital, Hasbro Children’s Hospital, The Miriam Hospital, Newport Hospital, University Orthopedics, Rhode Island Medical Imaging and Women & Infants Hospital. Students who successfully complete the program are eligible to take the national certification examinations offered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers, or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board.

Students must consult with their assigned advisor before they will be able to register for courses. Students must maintain a minimum grade of C in all required courses in concentration.

Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Program Goals - Upon completion of the Lifespan School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography program, the new graduate will be able to accomplish the following:

  • To prepare competent entry-level general sonographers in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.
  • Function as a member of the sonography team by utilizing proper written and oral communication skills specific to the medical environment.
  • Apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, and sonographic techniques to accurately demonstrate anatomical structures and related pathology.
  • Use principles of body mechanics (ergonomics), medical hygiene and patient care to provide and ensure the health and safety of the patient, sonographer and others.
  • Exercise independent judgment and discretion in the technical performance of medical imaging procedures.
  • Complete competencies in Abdominal Sonography, Obstetrics & Gynecological Sonography.
  • Obtained the didactic and clinical skills to successfully take and pass the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) registry examination in the areas of Sonographic Principles and Instrumentation, Abdomen, Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Nuclear Medicine Technology

    • Students will prepare, calculate and administer radiopharmaceuticals and pharmaceuticals as permitted.

Radiologic Technology

Medical Imaging Management

Mission Statement
The mission of the MI Management Concentration is to provide a pathway for the Medical Imaging Technologist to complete the requirements for a Bachelor’s degree while acquiring additional science, communication and management skills.

Program Goals

  • Students will build upon their technical expertise with a broad based general education program.
  • Students will expand their academic exposure to health related science courses.
  • Students will learn valuable communication skills.
  • Students will acquire a basic understanding of business management skills.
