Africana Studies Program

Established in 1972, the Africana Studies Program at Rhode Island College is one of the oldest Black Studies programs in the New England area. The program offers a trans-disciplinary curriculum in the arts, humanities, and social/behavioral sciences. The program offers a myriad of cross-cultural courses that focus on sociological, historical, political, literary, religious, and artistic themes.

Courses offered by Africana Studies enable students to have both a historical and contemporary understanding of the experiences, traditions, and dynamics of people of African descent throughout the world. By extension, the Program in Africana Studies prompts us to rethink not only what we know about people of African descent, but all of humankind. The program offers both a major and a minor. Africana Studies provides an ideal education for students who aspire to careers in academia, education, law, public policy, and social work.
