Safety Core to Edge – Does Safety Really Mean Safe?

Course Description: This course provides a solid basis on which to build a strong safety culture that minimizes workplace accidents and places safety on a par with other company core values. Participants will learn what they need to know to keep people safe and learn the basics of safety, incorporating field-tested techniques that have been utilized to raise safety awareness, resulting in programs that have been recognized with numerous national, regional and local safety awards. Students will also learn:  Who is responsible for Safety?; The reasons and causes of accidents, injuries, illnesses and close calls; Why mistakes are the major reasons for accidents; Keeping in mind risks involved in daily activities; Why low-probability events occur: How to work safely in spite of the presence of on-the-job hazards.

Sustainability Studies at RIC and the Westerly Education Center​

The Teaching and Practice of Environmental Sustainability
3 Credit Hours

Course Description: This course will first explore a selection of the classics of environmental literature, discuss and debate the concept, in theory and practice, of sustainable living from a range of perspectives, examine arguments pro and con for moving towards more sustainable patterns of economy and socio-cultural values, and demonstrate examples of effective lesson plans and activities on sustainability. Foundational readings on environmental sustainability; resilience; climate; ecology and habitat; vital resources including food, water, and energy; and economy will ground course participants in a holistic understanding of the complexity of the issues. Teachers will be challenged to draw from their own expertise, using their content knowledge and classroom experience to design innovative units that integrate the lessons of sustainability in ways that will inspire students.

Course Fee: $750 for undergraduate pre-service teachers and $969 for in-service teachers
